Cooling Water - Seawater Pumps "Gawa"
An existing steel pipe system was replaced by GRP (glassreinforced plastic) pipe system. The run of pipes is approx. 50 m long and, when filled with seawater, has a static weight of approx. 35 tons.
The choice of GRP is clearly the better solution in terms of material when compared with steel, e.g. biological problems such as encrustation with foreign matter etc. are significantly reduced thanks to the smooth internal walls of the GRP pipes.
To render the pipe system vacuum-resistant as well, the pipe wall thickness of the GRP pipes was increased to 11.3 mm. Part of the GRP pipe system was installed in a highly inaccessible duct. This task was greatly facilitated thanks to the low dead weight of the GRP pipes.
