Sea water pipe line ABB-gas fired power plant Tocopilla, Chile

GRP, with its smooth resin rich inner surface and corrosion-resistant laminate construction throughout, is the product of choice for the medium, seawater. Biological and marine problems, such as vegetation and mussel growth, are retarded and sometimes eliminated due to the surface friction values of GRP.

GRP was chosen instead of other materials such as rubber and concrete lined steel, for its many advantages. Some advantages of GRP fiberglass systems:

  • Light weight construction, less than 25% the weight of lined steel products
  • Corrosion resistant inside and outside, no cathodic protection or coatings required
  • Smooth laminar flow, surface roughness value of 1.7 x 10 -5/ft
  • Economic operational life of 50+ years
  • On site flexibility, for changes in spools and or pipe layout
